Highlights still has all the classics…
The hidden pictures, Goofus & Gallant, The Timbertoes Your Own Pages…whether you remember these things from the copy in the doctor’s office or you (were a lucky duck like me and) had your own subscription – they’re still full of all the classic activities. The girls LOVE their donation from Kids Need to Read.
In addition to the magazines for each girl, we got a 12-month subscription of Highlights and High Five for our library.
THANK YOU Kids Need to Read!
-Ms. Roberta
PS: I did the hidden pictures first when I was a little girl and it seems that not much has changed!
Happy B-day Dr. Seuss!
Yesterday the girls read And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street. Today they’ll work on their own books – To Think that I Saw it on Girls Inc. Avenue.
Classroom dialogue:
Jahnni – A horse pulls the first cart but a zebra pulls the second one.
Ms. Mara – We started with…what? That’s right. A horse and a wagon. Now we have…?
Nevaeh – An elephant!
Azure – Giraffes!
Jahnni – A genie!
Ms. Mara – A Raja. Can eveyone say raja? Now there’s a band in the wagon and…
Azure – and a farmer wants to hear the band.
Ms. Mara – Do you think your parents would believe you if you told them you saw all of this?
All of the girls – No!!!
Heartland Walk for Warmth
It was really cold. They had hot chocolate for us. And cookies. – Ebony
Hmmm…which part of my body was the coldest? My feet. And my hands. And my face. – Dae
I’m glad I went to help out people who can’t afford to pay for all of these bills. They raised a lot of money to help people out and I am proud that I helped. – Ebony
The 2 Unique Step Team actually stepped out in the cold, too. Ms. Ally’s college roommate came by and saw that Hunter was only wearing a skirt. She had two pairs of pants on so she gave a pair to Hunter. – Ms. Candice
Girls Volunteered Outside in the Cold…
…so that others might be warm in their own homes. Volunteering at Heartland Walk for Warmth was a great way for girls to give back to the community.
Technical Difficulties with Olympic Torch
They had pyro-technical difficulties in Vancouver at the opening ceremonies. Our closing ceremony had a torch glitch, too. See? It can happen to anyone.

Girls Inc. Olympics
The girls hosted their own Olympics in the Girls Inc. gym. Relay races, scooter races, and, of course, hockey.
Spaghetti Works
Reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs works up an appetite. The GIRLStart girls went to Spaghetti Works to celebrate their hard work this year (and to eat spaghetti!).

A toast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAxyokXUEpc
What is the right way to eat spaghetti? The girls will show you how it’s done… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOYMsBKPnfg
…and a special double-fisted twirling technique… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liaYZUn7S3U
And what gave the meal added value? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUpxtLHT7IY
Thank You SPAGHETTI WORKS for a great night out!
The girls gave everything – the food, the service, the atmosphere, (and the strawberry pop!) – a glowing review.
Oh, Susannah!

Math with Chocolate.
The teachers at College of Saint Mary make learning math delicious.
