Picasso Potato Heads
Asia made her own Picasso Potato Head creation. Then she made a rendering of her “statue.” Then she added glitter (of course) and some trim. Voila!
Kalila Creates Her Own Thing
“Picasso makes funny arms. He made his hands out of bread…You know I really don’t care about Picasso. I want to create my own thing.” – Kalila
What I learned…
As part of In Our Own Hands, girls visited with seniors at Royale Oaks Assisted Living.
“What I learned at Royale Oaks is how to play the game “Machable.” Girls Inc. girls call that game “Go Fish.” It’s a very cool game, but what I was playing with Joanne, Gloria, and Al was Uno. We had a great time and I appreciated it.” – Alyxandria
Rashell casts her vote.
Rashell looks over the classroom flip charts to cast her vote for community service projects – a service component of In Our Own Hands, funded by Best Buy.
“I think being a good leader will show other girls that it’s good to help out in the community no matter your age.” – Rashell

Parental Involvement
My Dad is here! – Madinah
Mom loves Op SMART
I LOVE Operation SMART! I truly appreciate the opportunity for the girls to have a completely different venue where they feel empowered and inspired to learn!
– Shawne Coonfare (mother of Isabella and Chloe, and a parent representative to the Board of Trustees)
NOMA Shout Out
NOMA girls want to give a shout out to:
Ms. Emily, Ms. Kate, Ms. Angel, Jennifer & Danielle, and all of the UNO grownups [that would be Dr. Leonard, Dr. Lipschulz, Paul Sather…]. – Makayla, Denai, Jamece, Jasmine, and Ronneyce
A lucky winner!
Ariyah won one of the books raffled off at the GIRLStart parent sharing night. We raffled off 3 copies of Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse – the same book we used for the evening’s read aloud activity.

GIRLStart Parent Sharing
Last night was Parent Sharing for the GIRLStart literacy program.
Girls read poetry written in the class. Ms. Mara did a read aloud of Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku3XR0XVXC4) and then each girl (and some of the moms!) decorated her own purse. Ms. Tess, GIRLStart coordinator, had a slide show of the semester’s GIRLStart activities and Ms. Kim, our evaluator, did some one-on-one parent meetings to discuss classroom progress.
