Bryan Collier Exhibit
Ms. Ally and the girls look at the Bryan Collier illustrations at the Joslyn Art Museum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkuD1MApb9s
The girls are excited to try out the activity provided by the museum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEaE6X3X4RE
The instructions are in a photo below. So is Ms. Ally helping the girls pin their work to the bulletin board for display. (Ms. Ally, thanks for coming with us on this field trip and thanks for donating two Bryan Collier books – Uptown and Visitng Langston – to the GIRLStart program!)
How close is too close?
Alisa demonstrates how close to stand to one of the art pieces in the impressionist gallery at the Joslyn using a laminated foot provided by the museum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yoxkoOKBVA
John Lennon
Girls: Who is this?
Ms. Roberta: That’s John Lennon, one of the Beatles.
Alisa: What kind of beatle is he?
Click on this video link to see Alisa stroll through the Bryan Collier exhibit. Here you will see her do a double take as she recognizes the John Lennon illustration from the cover of one of the books displayed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNlh06RBzcQ
Here, Alisa fetches the book and holds it next to the original illustration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgUmHUFkHqY
The photo below? Ms. Roberta hooks Alisa up with some John Lennon on her iPod. Here she is listening to Imagine.
Happy B-day Dr. Seuss!
Yesterday the girls read And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street. Today they’ll work on their own books – To Think that I Saw it on Girls Inc. Avenue.
Classroom dialogue:
Jahnni – A horse pulls the first cart but a zebra pulls the second one.
Ms. Mara – We started with…what? That’s right. A horse and a wagon. Now we have…?
Nevaeh – An elephant!
Azure – Giraffes!
Jahnni – A genie!
Ms. Mara – A Raja. Can eveyone say raja? Now there’s a band in the wagon and…
Azure – and a farmer wants to hear the band.
Ms. Mara – Do you think your parents would believe you if you told them you saw all of this?
All of the girls – No!!!
Highlights Magazine
I loved to find the things that were silly. I circled them all. – Faay
I liked finding the hidden objects. I could NOT find the banana…but then I finally found it. – Tanijah
The footage is a little dark – but you can tell the girls are enjoying their magazines… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkwayT2JTZ0.
Thank You SPAGHETTI WORKS for a great night out!
The girls gave everything – the food, the service, the atmosphere, (and the strawberry pop!) – a glowing review.
Spaghetti Works
Reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs works up an appetite. The GIRLStart girls went to Spaghetti Works to celebrate their hard work this year (and to eat spaghetti!).
A pre-meal etiquette reminder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzdOT9wOw5Q
A toast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAxyokXUEpc
What is the right way to eat spaghetti? The girls will show you how it’s done… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOYMsBKPnfg
…and a special double-fisted twirling technique… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liaYZUn7S3U
And what gave the meal added value? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUpxtLHT7IY
“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” artwork
After reading Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs the girls created some original artwork. Then off to Spaghetti Works for some of the real deal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfO0oPXwd1I
Karaoke = Reading!
If you want girls to read – put the words on a karaoke machine. They’ll attempt to read any word – no matter how many syllables – if it has a good beat and they can hold a microphone!
Look at how the girls follow the words on the screen… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mfeBMbMzJk (and the girls dancing on the sideline are fun, too!).
The girls here enjoy singing the chorus together… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ5nIofztw4 (this is only 15 seconds!).
A Poem for Ms. Mary
I’m going to write a rhyming poem for Ms. Mary. – Koko
