Girls In the Kitchen
On Saturday, March 19th the Junior League of Omaha treated Girls Inc. members to a Kids in the Kitchen nutrition fair – complete with healthy snacks (yogurt parfaits!!), hands on activities, and a gift of a pedometer for each girl. In addition to learning about healthy eating, the girls learned about careers in food such as nutritionists, dieticians, chefs, food scientists, and more. Some of the girls even learened a new skill – peeling fresh carrots for the first time!
The Junior League of Omaha prepared this slide show of the day’s events: http://bit.ly/htnzXz. And to see our Facebook album for more photos, click here: http://on.fb.me/gJ6sii.
How much sugar?
The girls measure out actual sugar to get a better understanding of how much sugar is actually in a serving of some of their favorite drinks.
“Wow! That’s a lot of sugar!” – Natalya
Healthy Cooking
Layla learns the correct way to cut vegetables (lots of them!) with a sharp knife and Natalya stirs the cheese sauce for the healthy enchiladas.
“Making cheese sauce us fun but all of the stirring is hard work!” – Natalya
Cooking Matters for Kids
The VNA, in partnership with ConAgra Foods, has been offering cooking classes for Girls Inc. members through the Cooking Matters for Kids program. The mission of Cooking Matters is to “empower families with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to prepare healthy and affordable meals.”
In this photo, the girls are learning to use ground turkey – healthier alternative to ground beef – to make enchiladas.
