Girls Make Good Pigeons

Ms. Ashley, a creative drama insturctor from The Rose, read Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.
The girls took turns playing pigeons – saying and doing whatever they
thought it would take to get to drive the bus.

“If you let me drive the bus, I’ll buy you a camera!” – Mariah

“If you let me drive the bus, I’ll give you a teddy bear!” Azure (as she shows us the “sad” face of a pigeon that doesn’t get to drive the bus!)

Girls Inc. of Omaha sets the robot in motion…

We had some serious issues.  We forgot to bring the cable for the laptop.  We knew that was bad and we were just real quiet.  Ms. Emily waited for us to say something and we were waiting for her to say something.  She didn’t get mad.  She was just like, “What do you want to do ladies?  It’s your choice.  Do you want to drop out?  Or do you want to make a plan?”  We went away from Ms. Emily to think about what our choice would be and we decided to choose to make a plan.  We made a plan to go around and ask the other teams if anyone had a cable like the kind we needed.  There was one Boys & Girls Club team that did and they let us use it so that was the plan.  No way were we going to drop out after all of the hard work! Uh, excuse me…no!

Some of our missions got accidentally erased from our hard drive in the second round.  We had to re-do our truck mission to get more points.

Next year we will get even more missions.  I am still learning a lot about programming.  We all are.  I can’t wait to do the next project. – Unek

Bringing home the trophy!

We got the first place trophy in the Teamwork category!  It was so awesome.  Last year?  Our teamwork wasn’t that great so we didn’t get as many points from the judges.  This year we were on it.  Whay can I say?  We just clicked and we were rollin’.

If they had a trophy for Team Spirit, we would have won that, too.  We were walking all around singing Girls Inc. songs and doing our chants.  It was so much fun.

We did a great job presenting our research, too.  I am pretty happy with how that went.  Yeah, I’d have to say I’m pretty happy. – Unek

Deltas teach Economics for Kids

I was shocked at the knowledge the girls had on how to handle a household.  They were really on top of things. – LeBree Perry

The activity was very interesting.  I think the girls were very attentive and were very knowledgeable about the information. – Lindsey Stennis

I am happy that Girls Inc. gave the girls an opportunity to learn real things about real life. – Valyn Gipson

Like Bam!

The Girls Inc. of Omaha Lego League Geeks work on the intro to the research component of their project.  The theme this year is “transportation” and the girls are looking right in their own backyard.  How can Girls Inc. of Omaha be more efficient – more green – with our own daily pick ups from local schools?

The still photo doesn’t do them jutsice.  Check out the video –   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzM3nkqOX_4

MVP Acceptance Speech

Dear Ms. Roberta,

When I heard I had won the “MVP” (Most Valuable Parent) Award, I was surprised and honored.  I wanted to write a thank you response down so that the Girls Inc. staff would know of all of the thanksgiving I have for them, so that nothing goes unmentioned.

My girls have been through a lot in their 10 and 13 years of age due to being placed in foster care because of my former drug use.  In the system they were referred to, and known as, a last name on their docket and a number.  At Girls Inc., they received an identity.  They are: Chanecia Martin, age 13, who is very girly, loves all the latest fashions, enjoys singing, has a mind for Lego League, and is now certified in CPR and babysitting.  Chalecia Trotter, age 10, who loves basketball and is good at playing it, who participates in Operation SMART, and who is learning to make and be a friend to girls in her age group.

Have my girls been in trouble at Girls Inc.?  Of course.  But all issues were addressed, and handled fairly and appropriately and we moved forward from there.

The staff at Girls Inc. are not afraid to address issues that a young girl, teen, or young lady may encounter, such as rumors of promiscuity, teen pregnancy, homework, trouble making, name calling, as well as job searching, essay writing for college scholarships…any issue that a female faces, Girls Inc. is there.

I want to say thank you Girls Inc. staff for the breakfast, lunch, Snackalisicous, talks of encouragement, field trips, lock-ins, parties, and all guidance giving to my daughters and all of the other girls you guys are helping and have helped – because the Girls Inc. building is just that – a building.  It is the staff that makes Girls Inc.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

A Mom!
